Public health officials have confirmed a person with measles has been in a public setting in Jasper while infectious.
Yesterday (July 14, 2025), Alberta Health Services posted an active health advisory, alerting members of the public who may have been in the same location at the same time as the infected individual.
The locations include the Whistler’s Inn (July 7 at 10 p.m. to July 8 at 12 p.m.) and Montana’s Restaurant (July 7, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.)
“Measles is an extremely contagious disease and the virus spreads easily through the air,” the active health advisory states.
According to the province, since the beginning of March, Alberta has seen 1,314 cases of measles.
AHS says that the measles vaccine is highly effective at preventing infection and complications of measles.
Symptoms of measles include:
- Fever of 38.3° C or higher; and
- Cough, runny nose and/or red eyes; and
- A rash that appears 3 to 7 days after fever starts, usually beginning behind the ears and on the face and spreading down to the body and then to the arms and legs. The rash appears red and blotchy on lighter skin colours. On darker skin colours, it can appear purple or darker than the skin around it, or it might be hard to see.
Complications of measles can include ear infections, pneumonia, inflammation of the brain, premature delivery, and rarely death. Persons who are pregnant, less than five years of age, or have weakened immune systems are at greatest risk of serious complications.
Members of the public who think they may have been exposed, and who are not protected against measles, may be able to receive immunization to reduce the risk of infection. More information is available on the Alberta Health Services website or by calling the measles hotline at 1-844-944-3434.
