Who are you and why are you running for council?
I originally came to Jasper to work restaurants for university friends. It was an eight month commitment. I have long felt a desire to offer my services to the community. Balancing as many as five jobs, I couldn’t devote the necessary time to properly represent the community. I am now a disabled stroke survivor. I walk my own path and I have no bias or affiliation with any interests here in Jasper.
What are your top community priorities that you think Jasper Municipal Council has a role in shaping, and why are these issues or themes important to you?
As a renter in Jasper I have constantly paid the price of council’s spending habits. When taxes are raised so is my rent. My decisions would be geared to making it easier for younger generations to stay and build a life. After returning to Jasper disabled, people told me I was the target audience to use transit. But there are no bench at the bus stops; not what I call user friendly.
If elected, how will you ensure transparency and public engagement in your decision-making process?
If elected I suggest report cards be made available on each representative pertaining to how they voted on particular topics, and summaries of outcomes—particularly immediate costs incurred by each decision. One frivolous expenditure I would like examination of is our sometimes controversial transit system.
What is one issue you believe isn’t getting enough attention in our community, and how would you address it?
Original First Nations inhabitants understood the ecosystem health was far more important than anything they had. Now is our opportunity to heal the forest. Without proper care of the forest the beetle will be back and the forest will burn again.
Closing Statement
I don’t have access to many of the services I require. But I have Jasper. That is what I need. It is my turn to give back to this amazing town.
