Who are you and why are you running for council?
As a resident in Jasper for over 34 years, my family has enjoyed everything the town and national
park has to offer. This is a special place, and I have always found time to give back to the community
through volunteering and as a municipal councillor from 2007 to 2010.
In 2021, upon retiring from 30+ years in the hospitality industry, I choose to run for council for a
second term. After the fire and the challenges facing our community, I feel there is a need for
continuity on council as the town, park, residents, and the tourism industry recover.
What are your top community priorities that you think Jasper Municipal Council has a role in shaping and why are these issues or themes important to you?
The last council developed and agreed to seven strategic priority themes to guide our decision
making and keep both council and administration focused over the last term. These appear on the
municipal website with a total thirty-one goals for these priorities.
The council should come together to determine our priorities for the next term and establish shared
themes and goals that will help us strengthen and enhance our community’s future.
Can you share a decision or experience that shaped your commitment to public service and how it influences your approach today?
Last term I made a commitment that I would always be prepared for any council, committee, or
board meeting by taking the time required to understand the information that needed to be reviewed
and discussed. Attendance at meetings was particularly important to me and over the previous 4
years I attended and participated in the discussions and eventual decisions.
My commitment is still the same, be prepared, participate, and make decisions based on the best
information we have at each meeting.
If elected, how will you ensure transparency and public engagement in your decision-making process?
In the last term we encouraged delegations to present in public their concerns, requests, and
opinions. I plan to continue this practice as one form of public engagement. We also developed and
passed a Public Participation Policy directing administration how and when to make more
opportunities for further feedback and comments. I will continue to be available to residents and non
residents for opportunities to discuss suggestions, issues, and concerns as they arise.
What is one issue you believe isn’t getting enough attention in our community, and how would you address it?
Funding for Municipalities is a challenge as towns and cities deliver the essential services to
residents. Our taxing authority is limited, and we need to ensure relationships with both the Federal
and Provincial government representatives allow us the best future opportunities to change and
enhance funding for Jasper. Our situation is unique and requires innovative consultation to ensure
positive outcomes for our community.
Please feel free to include a closing statement or sum up your platform.
We want to keep our community welcoming and diverse, offer cultural and learning
opportunities, and continue to respond to the needs of our residents. Our future depends on a
vibrant Tourism industry and a stable workforce with appropriate accommodation for all the
community.
We must consider the needs of all age groups while maintaining a fiscal and responsible budget
by balancing the needs and the wants of the community while delivering services.
I respectfully ask that you consider voting for me as one of your choices for councillor on
October 20.
