Jasper RCMP have arrested an individual in relation to an alleged sexual assault incident.
RCMP said today (Monday, January 5) that charges will be laid, pending Crown approval. In the meantime, the suspect has been released, according to RCMP. The process of getting charges approved can take up to two weeks, said Cpl. Mathew Howell from the Alberta RCMP Media Group.
“Once charges have been approved and laid, a fulsome update is anticipated,” Cpl. Howell said.
Cpl. Howell said that after an individual is arrested, flight risk and whether or not an individual is considered a risk to the public is assessed before they are released. Release is the general rule under Canadian law, but detention is an exception if specific conditions are met.
Background
On January 1, 2026, Jasper RCMP received a complaint which stated that in the early morning hours of January 1, a Jasper woman was assaulted in her residence. The victim did not know the person, according to the statement. The alleged attacker left a unique cap, according to RCMP.
“The victim left the area of Miette Avenue and Patricia Street on foot, with friends, around 2:30 a.m.,” RCMP said in a January 2 media release. “They stopped at the Circle K on Patricia Street and headed to her residence in the area of Geikie Street and Pyramid Lake Road.
“It is possible that the suspect followed them somewhere along the way.”
RCMP obtained a description of the alleged attacker and were asking the public for assistance in identifying a suspect. Jasper RCMP was grateful for those who helped share the request for assistance.
“Jasper RCMP would like to thank the public and the media who shared the story and took an interest in the investigation,” Cpl. Howell said.
A publication ban to protect the victim’s identify will be sought and RCMP are asking that information about the victim, should it be known to anyone, not be shared.
