Election 2025: Voting tools for residents

Election 2025: Voting tools for residents

Residents displaced by the 2024 wildfire can still participate in this October’s municipal election.

And with voting booths opening in less than two months, the Municipality of Jasper is helping ensure those who resided in Jasper on July 22, 2024, and who intend to return to the community, have all the tools they need to take part.

“If you are currently displaced as a result of the wildfire, and intend to resume residence in Jasper as soon as is reasonably practicable, you are still eligible to vote or run for office,” said Christine Nadon, Director of Protective and Legislative Services and the 2025 Returning Officer for Jasper’s election.

Election Day is October 20. If displaced residents cannot be in Jasper on that day (polls are open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the multipurpose hall at the Jasper Activity Centre), they can vote during advance voting or by special ballot.

Institutional votes will be held on October 14 at Alpine Summit Seniors Lodge from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and at Seton Hospital from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

“Our goal is to make the process as accessible and straightforward as possible for everyone,” Nadon said.

Advance voting

An advance vote will be held on Wednesday, October 15, 2025 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the multipurpose hall at the Jasper Activity Centre.

Special ballot

Special ballots are for residents who cannot make the advance or election day vote in person. Special ballot requests can be made in writing; by telephone; in person; or by email to info@jasper-alberta.ca

Applications for special ballots will be available between September 1 and October 10, 2025. Special ballots must be received by October 17, 2025.

All residents are encouraged to register to vote. To register or check your registration status, visit the Voterlink website at voterlink.ab.ca  Register by September 15 to ensure your name is included on the voters’ registry for the election.

“You will still be able to vote if you haven’t registered but it just makes the process easier if you have,” Nadon said.

Government-issued ID is required to vote.

Running for office

Displaced residents intending on returning to Jasper can also run as a candidate in the municpal election. To register, interested candidates may complete the Notice of Intent to Run form on the MOJ’s website, and submit it to the Returning Officer.

Candidates that register their Notice of Intent to Run must still also submit their official nomination forms, with required signatories. The deadline for nomination forms is September 22, 2025.

“Anyone interested in running for council should know the eligibility requirements and nomination process,” Nadon said. “We provide resources, including the candidates handbook and translated one-page guides, to make the process easier to understand, all of which are available on our website.”

Election day is October 20. Jasper voters elect six councillors and one mayor.
