On Friday, October 17, 2025, (James) Norman Brown passed peacefully in Jasper, surrounded by his two children, Tekarra and James Brown.
Born on July 29, 1960 and raised in Jasper, Norman grew up within a loving family and with a deep passion for mountain life and adventure. Though he ventured away for a time, his heart led him back to the place he always called home.
In the early 1990s, Norman co-managed Tekarra Lodge as Head of Maintenance. His skill, integrity, and dedication guided him to become a journeyman carpenter and plumber, working with contractors before building a business alongside his son. He later brought his craftsmanship and steady care to Parks Canada, where he completed his career.
Known for his light-hearted humour and endless trove of stories, Norman delighted those around him. The mountains were his playground—he hiked, backpacked, biked, skied, skated and paddled with a spirit of freedom and curiosity. He loved to explore new landscapes and travel to distant places, yet his greatest adventure and pride were always his children, whom he cherished beyond measure.

In the spring of 2024, Norman began to experience difficulties with his speech. By November, he was no longer able to speak—a profound challenge he faced with courage and grace. After many months of uncertainty, he was diagnosed in May 2025 with FTD and Bulbar ALS. Through it all, Norman kept moving—both in body and spirit—spending precious time with family, upheld by the care of his son and daughter. His girlfriend Glenda Winger and long-time friend, Kevin Klapstein, were steadfast companions during these final few years.

Norman was predeceased by his beloved daughter Leah (1995), his brother-in-law Jack Woods (2011), and his parents Doug Brown (2019) and Mabel Brown (2022).
He leaves to mourn his two children, Tekarra Brown (Josh Meaney) and James Brown; his treasured granddaughters Della, Daisy-James, and Wavy Meaney; his siblings Janet Woods, Doug (Lorie) Brown, and Clifford Brown; as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family members who loved him dearly.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Alpine Summit Lodge team for their gentle care during Norman’s brief stay and to the wonderful Jasper Homecare and Seton Hospital doctors, nurses, aides, and staff who supported Norman and his family. Special thanks to all who offered kindness and support.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in Norman’s honour through contributions to the Jasper Health Care Foundation.
A Celebration of Life will be held later in Jasper.
