A 38-year-old man is deceased after taking a fatal fall into a crevasse on the Athabasca Glacier.
On May 12, 2026, a group of three backcountry skiers and snowboarders were descending from the south ridge of Mount Andromeda. According to a Parks Canada spokesperson, while approaching the top of the highest icefall on the Athabasca Glacier, one member of the group fell approximately 25 metres into a large crevasse.
“The group was equipped for crevasse rescue and attempted to assist, but they could not safely access the individual due to multiple surrounding crevasses,” the spokesperson said.
At about 5:15 p.m., the group called Parks Canada dispatch for assistance. Visitor safety specialists from Jasper and Banff national parks, along with RCMP, EMS and STARS air ambulance, were dispatched to the Columbia Icefield.
While emergency responders were en route, another group of three skiers in the area stopped to assist and help ensure the group’s safety, Parks Canada said.
“At approximately 7:30 p.m., visitor safety specialists descended into the crevasse and confirmed that the man had died from injuries sustained in the fall.”
The two uninjured group members were extracted by helicopter. Recovery of the deceased was not possible until May 14 due to poor weather and hazardous conditions.
“Parks Canada extends sincere condolences to the family, friends and all those affected by this loss,” the spokesperson said. “We also acknowledge the efforts of first responders and Parks Canada staff who assisted during the incident.”
Glacier environments are complex and hazardous, and accidents can occur even with experience and training, Parks Canada officials stated.
“Ensure all members of your group are properly equipped and familiar with safe glacier travel, navigation and rescue techniques. Before heading out, check the weather and Avalanche Canada forecasts and reports, and leave trip details with an emergency contact.”
