Barrister Jessica Reed remains licensed in Alberta, offering estate administration and business law services to clients in Jasper and across the region.
Although Jessica Reed now lives in British Columbia, the Jasper-raised barrister continues to practise Alberta law remotely, helping clients in the community and across the West Yellowhead region.
“I want Jasper clients to have access to a lawyer. I want them to have good service,” Reed said. “I want to, as best as I can, continue to connect with the community, to keep helping.”
Reed grew up in Jasper, where her parents moved when she was six months old. After completing her university studies and legal training in B.C., she returned to the region and eventually took over a Hinton law practice, expanding her services to Jasper, Edson, Grande Cache and the Robson Valley.
She moved to Vancouver Island in May to broaden her professional experience and work with a larger team. She remains licensed to practise in both Alberta and B.C., allowing her to continue serving Alberta clients in several areas of law.
What services are available?
Estate administration is one of Reed’s key practice areas. She helps clients navigate Alberta probate and other legal requirements following a death.
She also handles corporate and commercial matters, including business purchases and sales and corporate reorganizations. Her familiarity with Jasper’s unique business environment is an asset, she said, particularly when navigating matters involving Parks Canada.
Reed now works with a team of about 17 other lawyers, giving her access to additional expertise for more complex files.
She can also assist Alberta clients with certain B.C. property transactions and help people whose assets or business interests span both provinces with estate planning.
There are limits to what she can do remotely. Reed said she won’t be able to handle Alberta real estate transactions requiring in-person signatures or provide in-person will-signing services. Clients needing those services should work with a lawyer who can meet them locally.
Working remotely
But for eligible matters, Reed said working remotely isn’t much different to how she served clients while living in Alberta. Consultations can take place by phone or video call, and most documents and communications are handled electronically. Some matters still require original documents to be couriered, and identity verification is necessary.
Reed believes the region needs legal services, particularly as Jasper continues its wildfire recovery and businesses work through rebuilding.
She encourages people who are unsure whether they need legal advice to reach out and discuss their situation.
“If you have an inkling that you need a lawyer, usually you do,” she said. “If I’m not the lawyer for you, I can help point you in the right direction.”
Prospective clients can contact Reed directly by email or through her Alberta work mobile, or get in touch through her law firm.
