Who will be left to protect our national parks?
In light of impending cuts, a letter writer has concerns with Parks Canada staffing and conservation mandates. // Bob Covey

Who will be left to protect our national parks?

Dear Editor,

How can the Liberal government under Mark Carney promote visitation to our national parks as a quintessential Canadian experience by providing free access one year and then the VERY NEXT YEAR cut their budget by $145 million?! And now nearly 3,000 employees have been issued ‘affected’ notices, with an estimated 500 about to lose their jobs!

Who is going to be left to welcome visitors, stop poachers, catch illegal campers, protect wildlife from harassment and put out wildfires?

Who will be there to monitor the effects of climate change on the parks’ ecosystems?

Mr. Carney ran to be  leader of the Liberal Party and then Prime Minister, with his environmentalist credentials front and centre. Where are they now?

It is inconceivable to me that national parks, one of the highest ranked symbols of Canadian identity, could be considered so dispensable when economic times get tough. Shouldn’t we be promoting Parks Canada as a bastions of ‘elbows up’ rather than decimating it?

Mr. Carney and Minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada Dabrusin – reverse these cuts!

Ken Walker
Victoria, B.C.
