Youth-focused version of Pathfinders program trains students to help the community on its recovery journey
Twenty-three Jasper students were recognized on May 28 for completing the Youth Navigators program, a leadership and mental health initiative designed to help young people support their peers and community.
Gathered around the World Tree in Robson Park, the students received certificates marking the completion of the year-long program. Youth Navigators is an extension of the community-wide Pathfinders program, created to equip Jasper residents with leadership and mental health skills as the community continues to recover from the 2024 wildfire.
The youth-focused version of the program was developed following the success of Pathfinders and includes training tailored specifically to the needs of young people.
Participants were selected through a peer nomination process. Students were invited to nominate classmates who demonstrate empathy, leadership potential, and a willingness to help others. The most frequently nominated students from Grades 7 to 12 were then invited to take part.
In November, 14 students in Grades 7 and 8 completed a one-day Junior Navigators course that included Community Helpers training and a tour of local support services. The session provided younger students with an introduction to the full program.
The main Youth Navigators cohort, made up of 23 students in Grades 9 to 12, began training in October 2025. Over the school year, participants attended nine training sessions and volunteered at community events. Topics included Community Helpers training, psychological first aid, naloxone and harm-reduction education, and presentations from Recovery Alberta therapists.
The program wrapped up earlier this spring with a session focused on maintaining personal mental health while supporting others. Local Indigenous knowledge keeper Matricia Brown also shared teachings on the Medicine Wheel and the importance of finding balance.
Organizers praised the students for their commitment and enthusiasm throughout the program.
The Youth Navigators program is delivered by Community Outreach Services and funded through the Rotary District 5370 Charitable Foundation’s Jasper Fire Relief Fund. Funding has already been secured for another school year, with the next cohort expected to complete the program in May 2027. Nominations will open in October 2026.
