Skiers and snowboarders heading to Marmot Basin this winter won’t have to worry about detours on the usual route from Jasper.
Parks Canada says direct access to the ski area via Wabasso Road (93A) will be maintained throughout the 2026–27 season as crews undertake slope stabilization work on a 2.5-kilometre stretch known as Mile 5 Hill.
In April, near the end of the 2025/26 ski season at Marmot Basin, that Mile 5 section was closed due to mud and debris on the road, forcing drivers to detour to the south end of 93A by Athabasca Falls.
This season the shorter route will be traffic-controlled. Beginning in mid-November, traffic-control personnel will manage alternating one-way traffic through the construction zone. Uphill traffic will be prioritized in the morning to accommodate skiers heading to the hill, with downhill traffic given priority later in the day.
Occasional short delays are expected, but no detours will be required. Cyclists will not be permitted through the work zone, and motorists are asked to obey posted speed limits and follow the directions of traffic-control personnel, Parks Canada says.
Drivers can check 511 Alberta online or dial 511 for updates on road conditions, delays and closures.
Cross-country skiers should note that Wabasso Road will remain closed for the winter between the gates at Whirlpool Road (Whirlpool cross-country ski hub) and Geraldine Road. Groomed trails will be available as conditions permit.
Parks Canada says the slope stabilization work is intended to address persistent instability in the area, improving the long-term reliability of travel along the route.
